Overview

The main focus of the individual working in this position is producing and repairing tooling for use in production or in the manufacture of prototypes.  This position requires good working knowledge of machining various materials, equipment care and maintenance, with a strong emphasis on safety.   Must be able to read and understand prints and work well with others.

Responsibilities

  • Machine parts to print, sketch, or descriptive requirements using available tools and equipment.
  • Create and troubleshoot programs for CNC lathe and mills (4 and 5 axis).
  • Work with engineering and manufacturing to produce and repair tooling and machine components.
  • Provide constructive input on designs to make them easier to manufacture or lower cost.
  • Work in a team environment to support company’s key projects and initiatives.
  • Provide cost savings and process/product improvement ideas.
  • Provide accurate time and material estimates from prints.
  • Troubleshoot problems and define preventative and corrective actions.
  • Self starter, must be able to work under minimal supervision and guidance.
  • Maintain equipment, and model shop tooling and supplies to support work.
  • Machine specialized parts, requiring a high degree of skill, ingenuity and accuracy.
  • Machining tight tolerance work in tough to machine materials.
  • Ability to make job specific work holding for repeat jobs.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Preparing tooling for EDM machines.

Required Qualifications

5-7 years minimum machining experience

  • Lathe, Bridgeport miller, Surface & OD grinding, CNC Mill, CNC Lathe and Wire EDM
  • Familiarity with Haas, Fanuc and DMG controls
  • CAD / CAM experience required. Preferably Solidworks and MasterCam or similar
  • Multi-axis machining experience required, 4th and 5th axis machining
  • Basic Tig Welding experience preferred
  • General Metallurgy knowledge relating to cutting speeds and feeds, along with the heat treatment of metals to produce desired hardness.
  • Good communication skills a must.
  • Ability to read, analyse, and interpret general prints and specifications.
  • Ability to visualize and plan complete tool build from stock to finish product.
  • Strong understanding of work holding for machining and safety.
  • Communicate with peers and management regarding any issues that may arise.

Preferred Qualifications

  • State of CT Journeyman Toolmaker Certificate
  • Firm understanding of high efficiency machining techniques
  • Experience with machining exotic high temp alloys

Physical Demands

The toolmaker position requires regular physical activity including standing, walking, bending, and reaching throughout the workday. Must be able to lift and carry materials and tools weighing up to 50 pounds. Fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination are essential for precise toolmaking tasks. Visual acuity is required for reading blueprints and inspecting parts. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required in designated areas.

 

This position operates in a machine shop environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, metal shavings, lubricants, and industrial noise. The workspace is typically well-lit and ventilated but may be subject to fluctuating temperatures. Employees are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed shoes. The role involves standing for long periods, working near others, and occasionally handling heavy materials or equipment.

Compensation

The compensation for this role is competitive and will be based on experience and qualifications. The anticipated range is $27.00 - $36.00/hour.
